What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a way to replace teeth that have been lost due to decay or trauma. They are considered the best way of replacing teeth as the implant post replaces the natural tooth root.

An implant tooth can look exactly like a natural tooth, and can be treated in exactly the same way as you would your own teeth. Dental implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or even a complete set of teeth. Implants can also secure crowns, bridges or dentures.Woman eating apple with dental implants

Conventional dental implants generally consist of three different parts. There is an implant post that is made from titanium that is inserted into the jawbone. Titanium is used because it integrates well with existing bone. An abutment is attached to the implant post, and this sticks up above the gum line, almost like a very small tooth. Abutments can vary depending on the final restoration, as those used to hold dentures are quite different from those used to hold a crown.

The final part of the implant is the restoration. Crowns and bridges can be cemented or screwed in place and cannot be removed except by a dentist, while dentures can either clip into place and can be removed or can be screwed into place only to be removed by a dentist for cleanings etc. (called Hybrid dentures).

We invite you to consider dental implants to get the smile you’ve always wanted. Together, we can determine if a dental implant might be the right choice for you.

What Is The Dental Implant Procedure?

Dr. Halabo will need to spend some time planning the implant surgery. This process involves taking down your medical history to see if you are suitable for dental implants, and assessing the bone in your jaw through the use of CT scans and dental x-rays (all taken at our office). These show the structures in your jaw in great detail, and are essential for planning successful implants.

The dental implant procedure is really quite short, and we will make sure you have plenty of anesthetic so you don’t feel a thing. A single implant can take as little as half an hour to insert into the jaw. Once it is placed your gum will be sutured back in position, completing this stage of surgery.

Afterwards you will probably want to take it easy for the rest of the day, but you should be fine to go back to work the next day. After this it is simply a matter of waiting for the dental implant post to integrate with your jawbone before the next part (the abutment) can be attached. The final step will be for the implant crown to be made, restoring your smile to its former glory.

What’s the Actual Implant Surgery like?

Many people are surprised at how quick implant surgery can be, especially to place a single dental implant. We’ll make sure you are comfortably numb throughout the whole procedure and the actual implant placement will probably only take half an hour to an hour. Afterwards you will probably want to take it easy for the rest of the day, but you should be fine to go back to work the next day. After this it is simply a matter of waiting for the dental implant post to integrate with your jawbone before the abutment can be attached. The final step will be for the implant crown to be made, restoring your smile to its former glory.

Why Quality Matters

Tooth implant cost can vary according to the type of implant, and the type of tooth or crown used to restore the implant. You may find some dentists offer cheap dental implants, or you might know people who have had this procedure in another country at significantly reduced costs. This is always risky, as implant dentistry is a surgical procedure, and it is necessary to use high quality dental implants that will not break or fail to integrate with the bone as well as having an experienced surgeon place the implants. We only use heavily researched quality implants, and our posts tend to be specially treated to make the integration process easier and more successful. Properly placed implants have a success rate of approximately 95% or higher, and will last a considerable number of years, or even your lifetime, making them a very cost-effective option.

How Do I Get Started?

If you are considering a dental implant, your best option is to book an appointment with Dr. Halabo to find out more. A consultation is required to find out if you are suitable for dental implants.

In addition you need to be a non-smoker or at least to be prepared to quit for the duration of treatment as this does affect the healing process. Although dental implants may not be suitable for diabetics who struggle to maintain their blood sugar levels, this treatment might still be suitable for someone who has the condition under control so it is worth asking. If Dr. Halabo thinks you are suitable candidate then the next step will be to have more diagnostic tests. This includes a CT scan that is included in our package deal.

Why Is a CT Scan so Important?

A CT scan provides a digital 3D image of your jaw and is vital for planning implant surgery. These high-resolution images enable us to see whether or not you have sufficient bone in your jaw to support a dental implant. It also shows the dentist the exact position of important structures in your mouth including nerves and sinus cavities as these must be avoided during implant placement. Your CT scan is used to plan the placement of the dental implant to provide optimum levels of success. This ensures the implant will be surrounded with plenty of high-quality bone and that the final restoration will look very natural.
